Manifestation of the Three Sages / 西方三圣的显像Archaeological Image Works2026 - Ongoing
"On the ruins of absent imagery, how do we reconstruct an image where no visual data survives?"
Manifestation of the Three Sages is part of my ongoing archaeological photography project. The "Three Sages of the Western Pure Land" at the Shengguo Temple site, nearly a thousand years old, have undergone almost a decade of archaeological excavation. Yet, they remain in a state of "archaeological impasse" due to a profound lack of historical imagery and severe physical erosion.
The project originates from a reflection on religious iconography: if these religious status were perfect, we might only gaze at them in distant, sacred veneration. However, when they become fragmented and unreadable, they instead ignite a primal impulse to uncover the truth of history.
This work explores archaeological evidence, historical texts, and the mechanics of perception through visual intervention. In response to the severe weathering, fading, and decay of the stone bodies, I utilise digital post-processing to heighten chromatic saturation and employ a gaze of extreme proximity. Between physical archaeological exploration and the imagination sparked by intimate contact, I attempt a visual reconstruction of wear, remnants, and repair marks. The image of the Three Sages is no longer a recoverable historical fact, but a phantasm—a collaborative construct between the desire of the observer, the materiality of the stone, and the inherent magic of time.
